Interviewing Tech’s Best Multitaskers Sebastian

May 17th, 2012

Charlie Rose aired a pair of interviews this Wednesday with Sebastian Thrun and Jack Dorsey, two tech guys who have much in common: massive ambition, unparalleled juggling skills, and a lot of things recently going their way.

Sebastian Thrun

Thrun wore his Google Glasses prototypes through his interview — as he says he does all the time — and talked about that project, Google’s self-driving cars, Google X in general, and his new online education start-up, Udacity. Dorsey talked Twitter and Square Exchange Server Key, as well as his angel investment in Instagram.

Both videos (each less than 20 minutes) are worth watching, but here are couple of comments that stuck out for me:

Of Google’s glasses, Thrun said, “People talk a lot about augmented reality — looking at objects and faces and finding information — but the compelling use case for us is the sharing experience.”

What does that mean? Taking pictures and sending them to Google+ (via the press of a button and a quick nod, as Thrun demonstrated), phone calls, notifications, email dictation and email reading.

Google X has been “overhyped,” Thrun protested somewhat halfheartedly. He said it’s a research group like at any other company, with a slightly different focus — it’s “not for the sake of writing research papers, but for the sake of impacting society.”

For instance, the Glasses project was based on hiring University of Washington professor Babak Parviz and giving him all the resources and engineers he needed to build something interesting over the past two years, Thrun said.

Meanwhile, when asked to describe the next era of technology, Dorsey said it was tools that disappear from sight when they’re irrelevant and only reappear when they’re relevant — like push notifications.

He also spoke a little bit about the myth of the founder Office 2010 Key, and told Rose it’s not a bad thing that none of Twitter’s founders are the CEO anymore.

“You can have a very shallow view and you can say there were three founders, only at the beginning. But the truly great companies have multiple founding moments through their history, and the truly great companies are constantly reinventing themselves all the time with the people they bring in, with the ideas they have around the table — and with Twitter, with our users. A lot of what you see in Twitter today was invented by our users.”

Dorsey also had some interesting and telling comments on Instagram, in which he was one of the first angel investors — and which Twitter had also made moves to buy, before Facebook acquired it for $1 billion.

“It makes sense that Facebook would pick it up,” Dorsey said. “Facebook’s core competency is photos Office Visio Key, but Facebook is known for the past tense. Photos are in the past, they’re in albums, they’re something that you have to maintain; you have to maintain relationships. Instagram represented the now, it represented the present — it represented a lot of the ideas that Twitter brought to the world. Even in the constraints — [Twitter has] a constraint of 140 characters, Instagram has the constraint of the square.”

Dewey & LeBoeuf pension plans seized; faces lawsui

May 17th, 2012

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Regulators moved on Thursday to seize control of pension plans at Dewey & LeBoeuf, the latest sign of likely collapse at what was once a top U.S. law firm. Dewey also faced its first lawsuit over plans to fire hundreds of employees.

The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation said it would take responsibility for three pension plans covering 1,800 current and future retirees. The plans were underfunded by $80 million, it said.

Angelo Kakolyris, a spokesman for Dewey, declined to comment.

Dewey has been struggling for weeks with partner defections and debt. It has warned employees that it could close its doors and it has said that New York prosecutors are probing allegations of wrongdoing by its former chairman, Steven Davis. Davis has denied wrongdoing.

In its statement, the pensions regulator said it was stepping in to secure its ability “to collect against the firm’s affiliates that share funding responsibility for the pension plans.”

The announcement came the same day an employee sued Dewey for failing to provide adequate notice of layoffs. The firm is firing about 450 people in its New York office effective Friday, according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit was filed by Vittoria Conn, a worker in Dewey’s document production department, who said the company owes her 60 days of pay because it failed to give adequate notice.

The lawsuit sought class-action status for others laid off by the company. Dewey “terminated approximately 450 employees at its (New York office) on or about May 7, 2012, effective on or about May 11 replica watches,” the lawsuit said.

The action was brought in federal court in New York under federal and state laws that require employers to give 60 to 90 days’ notice before mass layoffs. Conn said she was notified Monday that her last day would be Friday.

While it was not known how many people Dewey employs in New York, the 450 layoffs would likely be a big chunk of its workforce in the city, and provided an indication of how fast the firm was unraveling. Spokespeople for the firm have declined to say how many employees will lose their jobs.

In 2011, Dewey employed 1,040 lawyers worldwide, according to an annual survey by the National Law Journal, a legal publication. More than 180 of its roughly 300 partners have announced they have left or will leave since the firm’s troubles began. On Wednesday, two of the firm’s top leaders replica watches, Jeffrey Kessler and Richard Shutran, said they would leave Dewey & LeBoeuf for other firms.

But it is employees and junior lawyers who face the toughest times in a job market still recovering from the recent U.S. recession, experts said.

“When it comes to associates and non attorney staff, those are the people I really feel for because they’re going to have a much harder time getting work replica watches,” said Kent Zimmermann, a legal consultant at the Zeughauser Group.

UK says businessman slain in China was not a spy

May 17th, 2012

LONDON, Apr. 26, 2012 (Reuters) — A businessman whose murder sparked political upheaval in China was not a British spy, Foreign Secretary William Hague said on Thursday, trying to quell speculation that has swirled around the man’s mysterious death. British businessman Neil Heywood is seen sitting on a chair in this undated photo taken at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. REUTERS/Stringer

An influential parliamentary committee had asked Hague for more information about what Britain knew about Neil Heywood’s death in a hotel room in the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqinq last November, and about media speculation he may have been a British spy or informant.

“It is long-established government policy neither to confirm nor deny speculation of this sort,” Hague said in a letter to Richard Ottaway, the chairman of the Foreign Affairs committee.

“However, given the intense interest in this case it is, exceptionally, appropriate for me to confirm that Mr. Heywood was not an employee of the British government in any capacity Tattoo Stencil Machine,” he wrote.

Heywood, 41, was only an “occasional contact of the embassy Cheap Tattoo Guns, attending some meetings in connection with his business”, Hague said, adding that he was not known to the British Consulate-General in Chongqing.

Heywood’s relatives and a British security source also have denied he was a spy.

Chinese police initially attributed Heywood’s death to cardiac arrest due to drinking too much alcohol. But this month Chinese authorities said they believed it was a murder and named the wife of Bo Xilai, a former Communist Party chief of Chongqing, as a suspect.

Heywood’s death ended Bo’s hopes of emerging as a national leader and is potentially the most divisive issue the Communist Party has faced since Zhao Ziyang was sacked as Party chief in 1989 for opposing the brutal army crackdown on student-led demonstrations for democracy centered on Tiananmen Square in Beijing that year.

The British foreign ministry has come under fire at home for being slow to demand that China investigate the case.

Ottaway asked Hague last week why ministers were briefed about Heywood’s death only in February when Foreign Office officials were told weeks earlier about rumors among expatriates that Heywood’s death was suspicious.

Hague said Foreign Office officials had judged at the time that ministers did not need to be told about an “uncorroborated report”.

Hague was not told about the case until February 7, the day after Wang Lijun, Bo’s once-trusted police chief, fled to a U.S. consulate in an apparent attempt to secure asylum What Is In Tattoo Ink, alleging that Bo’s wife was involved in Heywood’s death.

After discussion with Heywood’s family, Britain formally asked China to investigate the case eight days later.

“We acted to seek an investigation as soon as we judged that concerns about the circumstance of Mr. Heywood’s death justified it, and we are pleased that the Chinese are now investigating,” Hague said.

From Cameron with love Murdoch protégée haunts

May 16th, 2012

LONDON (Reuters) – David Cameron signed off messages to tabloid editor Rebekah Brooks with an affectionate “LOL”, she told an inquiry on Friday, conjuring the embarrassing image of a British prime minister-in-waiting fawning over a Rupert Murdoch protégée.

As editor of Britain’s most-read newspapers the News of the World and later the Sun, Brooks had the power to make or break careers and was courted for years by top politicians until she quit in disgrace in July 2011 over phone-hacking by reporters.

Her testimony at the Leveson Inquiry into press standards revealed how she lobbied finance minister George Osborne and other ministers for the approval of a major Murdoch takeover bid – a key issue in a long-running controversy over whether the Murdoch press had undue influence on policy.

Adding fuel to that debate, an email she handed over as evidence showed that media minister Jeremy Hunt asked Murdoch’s News Corp how the government should position itself on phone-hacking. At the time, Hunt was in charge of deciding whether to approve News Corp’s bid for lucrative pay-TV group BSkyB.

Brooks also provided colorful details of her friendships with the cream of British politics, from private dinners with former Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair to Christmas parties with Conservative David Cameron, the current prime minister.

Brooks said she used to exchange frequent text messages with Cameron, including during the 2010 election campaign when the Conservative leader was still in opposition.

“Occasionally he would sign them off LOL, lots of love. Actually, until I told him it meant ‘Laugh Out Loud’, and then he didn’t sign them like that anymore,” she said, blushing to the roots of her signature bright red curls.

A celebrity in her own right who was previously married to an actor from a popular TV series, Brooks wore a demure black dress with a white collar for her long-awaited televised appearance. It was being avidly followed in Britain, where “LOLgate” was a top trend on Twitter just after she spoke.

COUNTRY HOUSE SET

Murdoch shut down the News of the World last July when it emerged its journalists had hacked into the voicemails of public figures and a murdered schoolgirl. In the wake of the revelations, Brooks resigned as CEO of Murdoch’s British newspaper group and is now under police investigation.

Until she quit, Brooks had close contacts with politicians even though the hacking scandal was gathering steam. Cameron, Osborne and Blair were among those who indirectly conveyed their sympathy to her at the height of the scandal in July 2011.

Brooks said Cameron had apologized for not standing up for her, explaining he was under too much pressure from Labour.

The impression that Cameron and Osborne surrounded themselves with a coterie of wealthy individuals for cozy dinners or horse riding in the countryside has been a public relations disaster for both men, who come from privileged families and are often portrayed as out of touch with society.

Brooks was for years at the heart of the “Chipping Norton set”, a circle of friends including Cameron and Murdoch’s daughter Elisabeth who socialized at the weekend at their country mansions around the picturesque Oxfordshire town.

After some playful exchanges at the start of Brooks’ testimony, lawyer Robert Jay’s questioning turned more serious and the atmosphere more tense as Jay tried to pin her down on the specifics of her influence over politicians and policy.

“I don’t know a politician that would turn down a meeting with a senior journalist from any broadcaster or any newspaper,” she said DKNY Clothes sale, seeking to play down her own personal power.

These questions will be raised time and again in coming weeks as Cameron, Blair and former Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown take their turn at the Leveson witness stand.

The appearance last month at the inquiry of James Murdoch, son of Rupert, revealed how a senior ministerial aide had inappropriately sought to help Murdoch’s News Corp secure the $12 billion takeover of lucrative BSkyB.

The aide quit but his boss, minister Jeremy Hunt, is also facing calls to stand down. He will be under further pressure in light of the email which revealed his request for News Corp’s advice.

In a written statement to Leveson, Brooks said she had “forcefully” expressed her support for the BSkyB bid to Cameron, Osborne and other government members. She said Cameron had told her, however, that the decision on allowing it was a quasi-judicial affair and was not his to make.

SHARP EXCHANGES

Jay also tackled Brooks over some of her most controversial stories when she was an editor, including a decision to “name and shame” convicted child sex offenders that resulted in a mob attacking a pediatrician mistaken for a pedophile.

The most confrontational moment of Brooks’ testimony came when Jay pressed her on her decision to splash the news that Brown’s four-month-old baby had been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. Brooks, describing herself as a close friend of Brown’s wife Sarah, said she would not have published the story if the Browns had asked her not to.

She later hit back at Jay, accusing him of focusing his questioning on trivial matters and suggested this was driven by her gender.

“We’re not in a tabloid newsroom now, we’re at an inquiry,” she chided him.

“Did Rupert Murdoch and I swim? … Did Mr Murdoch buy me a suit? The list is endless … I think a lot of it is gender-based. If I was a grumpy old man of Fleet Street no one would write a word about it,” she said, looking increasingly annoyed.

Dubbed by some the “fifth daughter” of Rupert Murdoch, Brooks edited the News of the World from 2000 to 2003 and went on to edit the Sun daily tabloid, Britain’s most widely read newspaper, for six years. She was the Sun’s first woman editor.

Her second marriage, to horse-trainer and Cameron school friend Charlie Brooks, was attended by Murdoch, Cameron and Brown. Shortly afterwards Murdoch promoted her again Cheap BCBG Dresses, this time to CEO of News International, his British newspaper group. She was in that post from 2009 to 2011.

As the phone hacking scandal spiraled out of control last July, Rupert Murdoch flew into London to take charge of the crisis, putting his arm around Brooks in the street outside his house and telling reporters that she was his top priority.

Routinely described in the media as a tough operator who struck fear into politicians’ hearts, Brooks is praised by colleagues as a phenomenal networker who can charm and beguile everyone from prime ministers to police.

Another Ferrari FXX on eBay

May 15th, 2012

When Ferrari sold 29 FXXs last year, only very special fans of the prancing horse were invited to buy. After writing $1.8 million checks, each of those FXX owners were treated like Ferrari factory test drivers, their cars shuttled to European tracks by the manufacturer, maintained by Ferrari mechanics and, if desired, stored at the Maranello test track.

Because of all the exclusivity connected with FXX ownership Tattoo Supplies, purchasers also had to sign contracts requiring Ferrari permission for any FXX to ever be sold.

That’s why it’s rather surprising to see another one show up on eBay. Possibly even more surprising is the odometer reading of only 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). Who buys an FXX and never takes advantage of track time in Maranello? The eBay listing is by MDM Eurotics, but doesn’t reveal the car’s VIN or owner Tattoo Supplies, so we may never know.

Bidding began at the bargain basement price of $750,000, and as of very early this morning, the price on the pristine supercar had reached $2.7 million. There’s one clue to the owner’s identity. The seller of this FXX may not be a car lover, but is definitely a shrewd investor.

How about one more FXX surprise? MDM Eurotics has not one but two FXXs for sale. The second also with only 10 km but is listed at €2.54 million ($3.34 million). Wow. Two FXXs in the same office. Hey, Boss? When are we getting ours?

More photos after the jump. Thanks to WenChun for the tip!

ReportChrysler considering new name for Ram trucks

May 14th, 2012

Chrysler is apparently still trying to iron out some of the kinks in its new pickup naming structure. The company recently decided to separate its popular line of pickups from the rest of the Dodge fleet by putting them under the Ram banner.
